May Stamp Club - May 1 and 3, 2010

All images and supplies are Stampin' Up!  The theme for the day was Circles, Circles, Circles!

Bashful Blue and Whisper White cardstock.   Bashful Blue ink sponged on; image and sentiment stamped in Chocolate Chip.  Circle template cut out with Circle Scissors Plus.  Each person at Stamp Club received a circle template.  The template was placed over the white cardstock piece.  Then the daisy image was stamped.  Then Bashful Blue ink was sponged in the circle, concentrating particularly around the edges so the circle image would be defined.  

This was the favorite of all the cards we did that day.  And it's a Clean and Simple easy one too!

Soft Suede and Whisper White cardstock were run through the Big Shot with the Finial Press Embossing Folder.  Soft Suede cut horizontally, paying attention to the embossing.  Then marked on cardstock base how high up the Soft Suede piece would come.   Stamped Circle Circus set circles in Soft Suede ink, looking carefully at sample card for positioning.   Then punched 1" circles and 1 3/8" circles out of the embossed white cardstock - paying attention to the embossed design so that flowers got punched.  Glued those down.  Glued Soft Suede piece down.  Added Organdy ribbon. 

Card CASED from:  (Will edit post when find)  Melon Mambo cardstock and ribbon.  Finial Press embossing folder and Big Shot. 

A 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 piece of white cardstock was run through the Big Shot with the Finial Press embossing folder.   Then the envelope flap was traced onto the debossed side and cut out, then glued onto the envelope flap.   Some of the reading I did indicated if the flap itself was embossed, then the sticky part of the envelope would not stick to seal the envelope.   The envelope flap idea came from here.http://www.stampinpretty.com/video-embossing-envelope-flap.html.  She has other envelope flap ideas also.  Go to her main page http://www.stampinpretty.com/ and look on the left for the envelope flap ideas.

Below are the directions for how to do the edge on this card.  The directions at each station for the other cards are available also - just email me and I will send you the Word file with all four card pictures and directions. 

- On Real Red cardstock piece (card front size) – mark middle of long edge with pencil.

- Using Slit Punch upside down – position it so that the pencil marked middle is in center of slit punch. Slide cardstock all way up throat of punch. Punch. Work punch off cardstock carefully – may need to push punched piece back down some.

- Measure 1/8” to the right of the slit edge; mark with pencil. Position Slit Punch edge at that pencil mark and punch. Repeat this on both sides of original slit until whole edge has been punched.

- Fold under – almost folds itself.

- Slide white 1” x 5 ½” piece in between folds of red cardstock.

- Adhere white piece to red, being careful not to put adhesive where it will show through the holes.

- Adhere red layer to black layer.

- Punch black 1 ¾” circle.

- Punch red Wide Oval.

- Stamp sentiment in black ink from Think Happy Thoughts. Punch out with 1 3/8” circle punch.

- Stamp flower from Think Happy Thoughts in red ink. Punch out with ¾” punch.

- Adhere flower to middle of sentiment circle with Pop Up Glue Dots.

- Adhere to top front of card.

- Adhere to white card base.

- Stamp “Stamped By” and put name or initials on back.

Other Samples at May Stamp Club

These are other samples that I had made or pulled from my stash for May Stamp Club.   These went along with the theme Circles, Circles, Circles, except for the last one.  I pulled the Dad one since Father's Day is coming up soon.

I took elements from each that I liked - so this card is a combination of the two.

3 x 6" card.  Began with a 6" by 6" piece of Kraft cardstock which I scored at 3".  Then layered on Chocolate Chip and then Old Olive cardstock.  The stamp set is Circle Circus - which is quite versatile!   I liked this one because it showed something different - a topiary made with the stamp set and punches.  I punched the images, then punched them out with (from bottom), the    circle punch, the     circle punch, and the    circle punch.  I worked with a sample to get my flower pot like I wanted it - I folded the original one in half so the sides would be the same, then I traced it and cut another one out.  The folded template one I stuck on the top inside of the stamp set box.  I then put the tree trunk down and the pot and the circle shapes, positioned them and then glued them down.

This is another card made using the Circle Circus set and punches.  The sentiment is from Well Scripted.   Cardstock is Whisper White and Melon Mambo.

Stamp set is A Flower for All Sesons and sentiment set is Well Scripted.   Cardstock colors are Real Red, Whisper White, Brilliant Blue, and Yo Yo Yellow.   The circles, including the partial yellow one, were made with the Circle Scissors Plus.   I didn't have red polka dotted paper, so I printed that off from My Digital Studio - one of the Designer Series Papers in the program.  Also used is the Scallop Trim Punch.  The basket, bird, and flowers were colored using the ink pads (smoosh to get a "palette" of ink on the top) and blender pen.  Ribbon is just a short piece of Crushed Curry -- the perfect use for those 1 1/2 or 2" pieces you end up with sometimes after trimming.

Sage Shadow and Sahara Sand.  Designer Series Paper - To the Nines.  Sentiment from Teeny Tiny Wishes.

The card above was made a while back.   I don't remember from whom I cased the idea, but I love it for its simplicity.

Just a circle cut with the Big Shot and the Clear Circle Die.   The top of the "ornament" is the Round Tab Punch in Brushed Gold Cardstock.  The round tab punch piece is folded in half. 

This card was done a while back also, so I don't have the information about who it was cased from.  Will come back and edit if I find it.   Stamp sets are Tart and Tangy and Curvy Verses.  Colors are Green Galore, Yo Yo Yellow, and Only Orange.

 

Not sure from whom I cased this card either.  Will edit if I find it. 

Awash with Flowers Two-Step Stamp Set

This card was CASED from stampcandy on splitcoaststampers March 15, 2010. See her card here. She has a lot of other pretty cards made with this set on her splitcoast gallery. Card base is Certainly Celery run through the Big Shot with the Perfect Polka Dots embossing folder.
Next layer is Orchid Opulence with a strip of Whisper White on the right that has been punched with the Scallop Trim Border Punch. Next layer is So Saffron. Then image is stamped on Whisper White. Ink pads used: So Saffron, Certainly Celery, Orchid Opulence. Sentiment from Well Scripted set is stamped in Certainly Celery on So Saffron Large Oval, backed by Scallop Oval. Butterfly is punched with the Butterfly Punch from the Shades of Spring designer series paper in the mini-catalog that ends April 30. Butterfly is adhered with mini glue dot. (Love those mini glue dots!)

This stamp set is on special April 1 - 30. It is a sneak peek - it is a stamp set that will be in the new Idea Book and Catalog that comes out in July. I made a sample for Stamp Club and am uploading it here. If I make more cards with this set, I'll come back and upload them into this post.

This stamp set has a lot of pieces - the clear mount comes in two separate cases rubber banded together.

It is quite versatile as to how you can color it. It is a Two-Step set, which means we stamp the outline and then go back and stamp the color inside of it. Using a stamp-a-ma-jig would be very helpful. I didn't use it with this sample - I was in a hurry. I did it in about 15 minutes before April stamp club -- BUT -- I had gotten everything together the night before. That makes a huge difference. I had been wondering how Heather in Canada was able to make a card and video just about every day with 4 small children - one of them 3 and one 5 months. I'm thinking she just has to do things in steps, one of them being get all the stuff together. Then go take care of baby. Then come make card parts. Go take care of little ones. Then come back and put card together while videoing!

Anyway -- some of the techniques that can be used with this set. Before that though -- one thing with the clear mount stamps - you can mount images on the block at the same time.

And other trick I saw was to mount the outline images on one block and lay it down stamp up. Then lay another clear block over that and adhere your coordinating solid images in the same layout (see Marker to Stamp technique below).

- Standard Two-Step Stamping - stamp outline, then use ink pad to ink up the solid image and stamp it within the outline.

- Use Watercolor Crayons directly on the solid rubber images. Spritz with water and stamp for a natural watercolored look.

- Use the Marker-to-Stamp technique and color on the solid rubber images. Use multiple markers for a beautiful, colorful image.

- Kissing technique.

- Use just the line images and color them in with your favorite technique (watercolor crayons, watercolor pencils, pastels, ink refills, etc.

- Embossing and Embossing Resist Techniques

Stamping April 10 and 12, 2010

These are the cards we did April 10 and 12.


Acetate Strip Pop Up Card (also called Fan Belt card)



Front of card is a direct CASE from tjdstampsalot dated September 24, 2008. See her card here for front and here for inside.

She had the inside as a spiral pop up card (we have done that style of card earlier).

I changed changed the inside from spiral pop up to acetate strip pop up. Stamp set used on the front is Celebrate Everything. "YOU" was stamped in Brilliant Blue ink on Summer Sun cardstock and then punched out with small star punch; that small star was then glued to large Brilliant Blue star.

Nora and I were working with making some more of these cards a week or so later. We learned that the stars that are taller in the inside need the 1/2" wide strip of acetate in order to stand up better. They don't do as well - they're more floppy - if the 1/4" strip of acetate is used.

Stamp set used on the inside is Happy Everything. Stars punched with small and large star punches. Cardstock colors used: Summer Sun, Brilliant Blue, Real Red, Whisper White.



Here is how you make the open center stars. Punch out small star with small star punch. Then position large star punch over the negative (hole) and punch again.

Sweetened Condensed Milk Technique

Key words here are PINCH of clear embossing powder and sprinkle LIGHTLY. You do not want to put embossing powder on like you do when you are embossing something and you don't want to put it on the whole image. You want just a little bit - it seems to help it dry faster (still takes a long time with the heat gun though - you've got to wait for the milk to "cook."). I held the card between 45 and 90 degree angle and sprinkled lightly that way so that I wasn't getting the whole image coated and then flicked extra off. Also note the note in red: use Sweetened Condensed Milk - not evaporated milk which also comes in a can.

Card created by Helen! (I was looking for a solid image stamp that would work well.) Stamp is from Kind and Caring Thoughts set - stamped with sweetened condensed milk; sprinkled LIGHTLY with a PINCH of clear embossing powder, and heated with heat gun until the sugar in the milk caramelizes. Cardstock: Taken with Teal card front; Apricot Appeal layer; Very Vanilla is image panel. Cathy Dismuke asked about learning this technique. I researched several places to learn how to do this technique. Other solid image stamps that would work would be Inspired by Nature and Upsy Daisy. I tried the images on the following cardstocks: Barely Banana, Apricot Appeal, and Very Vanilla and decided it showed up best on Very Vanilla.

Envelope Interest -- Designer Series Paper liner

Certainly Celery DSP; Funky Forest wheel; Certainly Celery Ink.

Front of envelope was also wheeled. Used wheel guide to keep wheel straight. Lined up envelope and guide with lines on grid paper.

Card CASED from Rumple2103 on splitcoast dated March 13, 2010. See her card here.

Certainly Celery DSP to match envelope liner. Certainly Celery and Whisper White cardstock; Trendy Trees stamp set. Certainly Celery and Close to Cocoa ink. White Taffeta ribbon; used clip from Clip Assortment, page 179 of 2009-2010 IB&C. Also used Stamp-a-ma-jig to place tree top onto tree trunk.

I also read/learned something about using the Stamp-a-ma-jig -- AFTER this class. I had learned to use a piece of vellum with the stamp-a-ma-jig before -- then you can just save that piece where you've stamped your stamp rather than wiping it off of the plastic sheet that comes with the stamp-a-ma-jig. By using the vellum and keeping that in the case with the stamps, you don't have to do that first step each time. I did realize I need to write "FRONT" on the vellum though so I know which side i was using.

The new thing I learned is to use a darker color ink pad on the vellum sheet (but be careful to change colors that first time before you go to your card). In class we used celery ink with the stamp-a-ma-jig because that is what we were going to use on the card - but the celery was rather light and it was challenging to see the little tree trunk blank spaces in the middle of the tree top. It would have been easier to see if the vellum piece or the plastic stamp-a-ma-jig piece had been stamped in black or Always Artichoke.

I wanted to use Certainly Celery for the make 'n take since it was spring and Certainly Celery is spring color and because the one I was casing from used Celery. But Trendy Trees is quite versatile -- by changing color - see Pumpkin Pie card below -- it becomes a fall card.
I've seen the tree top done in pink also -- for a feminine and even more springy card. Like a red bud or Judas tree.

Easel Card

The first card demonstrated was an Easel Card. The tutorial for how to make this card can be found at http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/. Click on Resources at the top right, then Projects, then scroll down alphabetically until you find Easel Card.

Here is a side view of the card so that you can see the easel set up. Stamp sets: Happy Memories and Whimsical Words (both SAB 2010); Cardstock: Meant to use Pretty in Pink but picked up a retired pink instead, So Saffron, and Whisper White; Markers: So Saffron, Pretty in Pink, Certainly Celery; Scallop Trim Border Punch (SAB 2010), Soft Subtles brads, Tea Party DSP.

For a 4 1/4" square card, you begin with a 4 1/4" x 8 1/2" piece of cardstock.

The 4 1/4" x 8 1/2" piece of cardstock is

scored at 4 1/4" (show here in pink from the right

edge) and again at 6 3/8". Then red sticky tape

is applied on the left portion as shown.

Then turn the pink piece so it is vertical in front

of you and the part with the tape is facing away

Line up the 4 1/4" square piece with the top of

the portion with the sticky tape and tape down.

When you finish and turn on side, see Sage Shadow above. It should look like a chair with long front legs -- or like a lower case "h".

Then pull the card over so that the base is down. Then decorate as desired. The card we made had "stops" about 1/3" way of base - would have been better to make them at 1/2 the distance of the card base for it to stand better. Here we used flowers punched from the Trio Flower Punch with brads in them as the stopper. Other things used: buttons, punched shapes like circle(s) or oval(s) raised up on dimensionals, ribbon, a panel (with or without decorative edge) at bottom of bottom part, best raised up on dimensionals.

Side Stair Step Card

This card is cased from: craftdoc. See her card here posted on splitcoaststampers.com on March 24, 2009.

Stamps set used: One Good Egg, Cardstock: Green Galore and Whisper White, Basic Black ink pad, Kaleidescope designer paper, So Saffron marker, So Saffron Striped Grosgrain Ribbon.

Here is a picture of a 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 piece of cardstock and where the one cut line and the score lines should go. I have more directions in a Word document if you would like me to send you a copy.


Brayering Bride Paper

This card is CASED from calebandmemsmom. See her card here posted at splitcoaststampers on January 27, 2010.
The white Bride's Paper on page 158 of the Stampin' Up Catalog can have ink brayered on. The design in the paper resists the ink, but the background soaks it up. We made sure we had the brayer well inked and inked and brayered several times, coating the paper. If there is some unevenness, it seems to go away after a while -- I think the ink soaks in.

I made a couple more cards trying out Certainly Celery Ink and then Pretty in Pink Ink.

Stamp set used for the greeting is Well Scripted in the Occasions Mini catalog (deadline April 30); wide oval punch is used to punch it out. Card base matches ink color.

The package of Bride Specialty Paper (12" x 12") has 5 sheets of the swirly paper and 5 sheets of the striped paper. I had seen the striped paper used around Christmas with red ink, so I tried that also, but used a birthday greeting from Well Scripted. Ribbon is white taffeta.

Then I tried some more colors. On the left: Yo Yo Yellow, Lavender Lace, then below Sahara Sand, and Apricot Appeal.

On the right: Perfect Plum Pale Plum, and below is Orchid Opulence.

Stamping 2.6.10 and 2.8.10

The card above is a direct case (except sentiment changed) from Claudia Perry, a fellow demonstrator in Columbus, Georgia. See her card here. (Just click on the word "here" and it will take you there - scroll down as there are a couple of other "kissing" cards before you see this one. I decided to learn to do links!) The technique demonstrated is "Kissing." Appropriate for February, I thought! The butterfly is the piece on which that technique was used. (See directions below for how to kiss! : ) ) I learned about printing the designer series paper from My Digital Studio from reading her blog - it is from the Sweet Pea download - and printed on Pretty in Pink cardstock like she did. Other items used: Pretty in Pink cardstock and ink pad , Chocolate Chip cardstock and ink pad, white cardstock, chocolate chip 5/8" grosrain ribbon, Pretty in Pink 1/4" grosgrain ribbon (even though it looks white here, it is pink in real life), Butterfly Accent stamp, Sanded background stamp, kite string, eyelet border punch. I did change the sentiment and punched it out with wide oval punch. Both butterfly and large oval adhered with mini glue dots I believe. The sentiment is from Teeny Tiny Wishes - which is one of the best sentiment sets ever! I scanned the directions that I had at each station below each card, but I must have done something different than last time. They weren't readable. If you want the directions, please email me and I'll send you the Word document.

I also encouraged everyone to develop the habit of stamping "Hand Stamped By" on the back and putting their name or initials. I need to work on developing that habit too.

This card was created by juls716. I found it posted on splitcoaststampers on July 29, 2009. See her card here. I just loved the colors in this - especially the pastel chalks used on the peacock. The stamp is from the Very Thankful set on the inside back cover of the Stampin' Up! catalog - it is a Ronald McDonald stamp. In class the Bermuda Bay A2 card front piece was textured. (Mine pictured here is not textured - it is regular cardstock - because I wanted to save the textured for class use.) The pink grid piece is from the Razzleberry Lemonade pack of designer series paper. Then a Crushed Curry layer, and the Whisper White layer with the peacock adhered on top of that. The peacock was stamped in Versamark and then the chalks were added using sponge daubers. I tried q-tips first, thinking they would work better for the small areas - but actually the sponge daubers worked best. The Q-tips smudged the chalk more when I went to put it on the peacock. Sponge daubers daub better. Photo Corner punch also used.

The other things I learned are:

- Can see the Versamark better on the Whisper White cardstock

- Works better to do this in the daytime in good light (like under kitchen table light and with the window blinds open to let in natural light). Was a challenge to see the Versamark image the night before when I was using a different white cardstock and didn't have the better lighting.

Products used, all Stampin'Up!: Whisper White cardstock, Bashful Blue cardstock, Pretty in Pink cardstock, Sage Shadow cardstock and ink pad. And from the Occasions Mini catalog (which lasts through April 30, 2010): Well Scripted stamp set for the sentiment, Scallop Trim border punch, Perfect Polka Dots embossing folder, Beautiful Wings embosslit die (punches out 5 butterflies and embosses them all at the same time).

Extra Large Two Step Bird Punch

What a super Play Day we had last Saturday! Really good turnout - about 8 of us! I walked out one time and came back in and looked at the dining room table while everybody was in the midst of working -- meant to go get camera and take a picture, but forgot -- it was REALLY, REALLY COVERED!!! Delightful picture of everyone working hard!

While cruising Splitcoast, I came across this different idea for using the Extra Large Two Step Bird Punch that is in the present Occasions Mini catalog. So that is what I worked on Saturday. For those of you that weren't there, I wanted to share the cards below with you cause I thought the rosebuds were SOOO neat! (You know I love it when someone comes up with "out of the box" - new way to use something ideas.) (For those of you that were there, there is one card at the bottom you haven't seen yet.) I am so LOVIN' this bird punch!

Thought I'd show this card first of the normal use of the Bird Punch and how the bird normally looks. The wing has been punched out of designer paper so that it is different from the bird. Isn't she sweet? (Started to say "he," but decided this was a "she" since she is pink!)



And here is what I was entranced by -- one of the posters - windyredbird -- who posted these on Splitcoast on January 25, 2010, used just the wing part -- 3 of them - and made a rosebud. I loved her creativity! (Maybe because I remember doodling back in high school and drawing rosebuds. But mostly because she did something different and innovative.) The stem part is part of the punch also. I cut off the topmost leaf so that the rosebud could be cradled in the two leaves you see here. Pretty in Pink cardstock, Old Olive cardstock.

Then next I decided to try yellow - Barely Banana cardstock -- since she had also made a yellow one. And because I like yellow.

And then, since it is close to Valentines, decided to try a Real Red cardstock one.

And then I rememberd that Earl's Mom likes white roses. And she likes lavender. And she reads my blog. So Mom - this white rosebud is for you! I've decided I like the tips of the rosebuds close together, like the ones above. The tips of these white ones could be a little bit closer together. Cardstock is Lovely Lilac - or Lavender Lace. I had pulled both out to play with.

Then, another day, windyredbird had this cardinal! (She posted it January 27, 2010).
So I tried that. The tuft on top of his head is the wing, situated just so. The cardinal is sponged some with Basic Black ink around his beak and on his feather. I punched just the beak out of Crushed Curry. I was able to position the punch to just punch his beak, so didn't use a lot of the Crushed Curry.

And -- the birds can be turned around and used either way. Bird positioned on the right is above. Then I turned him over and decided to position him on the left - see below. I added an eye with permanent marker on the pink one at the top and this cardinal below (forgot to add it on the above cardinal). I like the eye added.

Then I also saw a bird punch card using the little Kisses notes that are in the Occasions Mini -- I really like the way they are shaped and how they dress up the card. They come 20 to a packet for $3.95. The bird is punched out of designer series paper (a retired pack). This is still A2 card size. I love the size and shape of the Kisses note cards! They are one layer, so work perfectly for embellishment like on the card below. "Love You" is from the Well Scripted stamp set with the "much" covered up. This card below is red all the way to the edges. All the cards above the colored cardstock is 1/4" less on two sides so that there is 1/8" of the white cardbase on each side of the colored cardstock after it is layered on. Then the white top part is 1/2" off on two sides so that the white top layer is 1/8" smaller on each side than the red.

Windyredbird also decided to try some other birds. She posted cards with a chickadee, robin, goldfinch, and a bluejay. Yes ... I printed them out. I think my next ones to try are the robin and the bluejay. The bluejay is similar to the cardinal in that the wing is used to make the tuft at the top of his head.

Sue Robertson posted a Peace redbird - it had the branch cut out of white cardstock in its mouth. Anfimem also crafted a chickadee.

There were several cards that made the birds into lovebirds -- two birds facing each other and a heart either between, below or above them.

And some used part of the branch to make more tree limbs.

I've just had the best time playing with this bird punch!
